Eleanor Craig is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University. They write about religion's entanglements with gender, race, and coloniality in philosophical and literary discourses. Their work is informed by queer theory, critical ethnic studies, decolonial philosophy, and psychoanalysis, and they have abiding interests in disability, ecology, and relationships between Asian American, Black, and Indigenous studies.
Craig is co-editor with An Yountae of Beyond Man: Race, Coloniality, and Philosophy of Religion (Duke UP, 2021). They also co-edited the "Affect Theory and Political Theology" special issue of Political Theology (2024) and the "Practices of Devotion" special issue of Representations (2021). Their monograph in progress, "Fated Falls: Religious Imaginaries at the Limits of the Human," analyzes how notions of fallenness and original sin shape discourses on trauma and bare life. Taking cues from philosopher Sylvia Wynter, this project argues that religious concepts within these theories implant racial, gendered, and sexual logics and hierarchical modes of assessing in/humanity. It asks how writers on racial melancholia inherit and metabolize these patterns, and to what extent they reinforce or undo a sense of fallenness. The second book project traces religion's relationships to gender, coloniality, and race in Asian American feminist poetics. Work related to this project is published in Representations and forthcoming in GLQ.
Craig was a Short-Term Fellow at Yale Institute of Sacred Music (2025), co-lead for the Northeast Critical Ethnic Studies Working Group Grant from the Asian Pacific American Religious Research Institute (2023), and an Emerging Scholars in Political Theology cohort member (2020-2022). They are currently co-organizing a working group on Care as Theory and Method in the Study of Religion sponsored by the Center for Political Theology at Villanova University.
In the American Academy of Religion, Craig co-chairs the Theology and Religious Reflection program unit and serves on the steering committee for Religion, Colonialism, and Postcolonialism. They are a member of the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Minoritized Persons in the Profession.
